Imagine this: you're at the crossroads of crafting your child's identity, starting with a name that speaks volumes about your dreams and values as a parent. This pivotal decision mirrors a broader journey of nurturing and shaping, extending far beyond a simple name tag.

Welcome to the world of 'Culinary Capital,' a concept I passionately advocate for. It's not just about palatable pleasures; it's about equipping your child with a gourmet compass that guides them through various cultures, cuisines, and customs. This culinary journey is integral to their growth, molding them into confident, culturally aware adults.

Picture your child, now grown, stepping into a world brimming with flavors and traditions. They're at a pivotal business dinner, surrounded by a medley of unfamiliar yet enticing dishes. Here, their 'Culinary Capital' comes into play. Will they shy away from the unknown, or will they dive in, embracing each new taste as a chapter in their culinary storybook?

In our interconnected world, the ability to adapt and appreciate diverse culinary experiences is more than a skill—it's a necessity. Our children have the world's flavors at their fingertips, and it's my role to turn this exposure into an empowering tool. It’s about more than just surviving a social dinner; it's about thriving in it.

But here's the twist: you don't need a passport for this culinary odyssey. The journey begins in your backyard! There’s a universe of flavors waiting just around the corner, offering lessons and experiences that extend well beyond the classroom.

I believe in transforming every meal into a learning experience. It's about nurturing not just taste buds but also etiquette, cultural understanding, and adaptability. It’s about turning a simple meal into a life lesson, one that imparts wisdom, confidence, and a zest for life’s diverse banquet.

So, let's embark on this delicious mission together! Let’s pledge to cultivate 'Culinary Capital' in our children, setting them on a path of gastronomic exploration and cultural curiosity. It’s not just about what’s on the plate; it's about shaping a global citizen, ready to embrace the world, one bite at a time."

Ideas for your family's Culinary Capital journey together:

  • Pick a unique fruit, vegetable, or spice from the grocery store and research a popular recipe and cultural origin to share with your kids.

  • Choose a food your child doesn’t know how to eat (i.e. artichoke) and explore together.

  • Visit a local ethnic grocery store with your kids for a different shopping experience with unique ingredients.

  • Eat at a restaurant where most of the customers don’t look like you! If you wanted to try Vietnamese, for example, I guarantee a bowl of pho is going to be good if the majority of the patrons at a given restaurant are from Vietnam!

  • Share cookbooks with your kids at home (or the library) that showcase enticing pictures of new and interesting foods to try making at home.

  • Practice setting the table, making note of where to place the utensils, napkins, and cups.

  • While dining out, teach your child which bread plate and water glass are his by making a letter “b” (left hand) and “d” (right hand). Touch your index fingers to your thumbs, and keep your middle, ring, and pinkie fingers in a straight line. The “b” is for bread plate, and the “d” is for your water glass.
